Ninth Annual UConn Ballroom Competition Results

As a homecoming of sorts for us, Lina and I competed at the Ninth Annual University of Connecticut Ballroom Competition last weekend. The competition was a blast, and we did alright.

Without further ado, the table below reflects our exact results.

Level Style Dance Final Cut Marks
1st Cut 2nd Cut 3rd Cut 4th Cut
Bronze American Rhythm Cha-Cha Quarter-Finals 4/5 3/5 0/5
Rumba 1st Round 1/5
Swing 2nd Round 4/5 2/5
American Smooth Waltz 2nd Round 5/5 2/5
Tango 2nd Round 4/5 2/5
Foxtrot 5th Place 5/5 4/5 3/5 3/5
International Standard Waltz 3rd Round 3/5 3/5 2/5
Tango 1st Round 2/5
Quickstep Semi-Finals 3/5 3/5 3/5
International Latin Cha-Cha 2nd Round 3/3 2/5
Rumba 1st Round 1/3
Jive 2nd Round 3/3 2/5
Silver International Latin Samba 1st Round 0/5
American Rhythm Mambo 1st Round 0/5

So, as you can see, we did reasonably well in bronze, but pretty much got creamed in the events in which we danced up a level (which is to be expected, I suppose). We did take home fifth place in Bronze American Foxtrot, though, which was completely unexpected given that the last time we’d danced said style was probably the last competition that we were at.

In terms of the actual marks we did/didn’t recieve, it looks like Daryll and Gunnar Sverrisson hate our dancing. I don’t think either of them have ever given us a mark in any event throughout our ballroom career. On the bright side, it looks like we know who we need to take lessons with in the future.

On that note, our lessons are going well. We’ve been taking standard lessons with Mark Sheldon and latin lessons with Helle Rusholt. We plan to see a variety of other coaches in the future, but still have quite a bit to go with both Mark and Helle before we’re ready to try others.
