Fring, SkypeOut Not Playing Nice? Solved.

I’ve been using Fring to make SkypeOut calls over WiFi. Not only does this shave billed minutes off of my phone bill, but what with the iPhone’s 3G chipset being unreliable as all hell, I honestly prefer to make some of my calls via Skype anyways as long as I know I’m going to be in WiFi range for the duration of the call.

Here’s how to get Fring to work with SkypeOut: prepend the call number a + followed by the country code of the recipient of the call. For example, when calling a phone in the U.S. add +1; (800) 867-5309 then becomes +18008675309. To get the +, I simply press and hold the 0 key on the dial pad in Fring.

I’m not sure that this was always required, as I could have sworn that Fring used to ‘just work’ most of the time, but maybe I’m mistaken. Either way, I’m glad to have it working again!

Dropped Calls, the New iPhone, and 3G

Since I got the new iPhone 3G, I’ve been getting a whole ton of dropped calls. Not just the normal amount that I used to get on the old iPhone’s crappy reception, but even more weirdly so, calls would drop immediately without any warning — no silence on the other end, no garbled sound, no period of inactivity, nothing other than three maddening beeps and a “Call Failed” message on the phone. It seems that others on the Apple support forums are having the same issue and provide some insight as to what might cause it.

Secondhand Serenade @ The Webster Underground

Secondhand Serenade

Last weekend Tracey, Lina and I went to see Secondhand Serenade live at The Webster Underground and had a blast. Though I was sick and probably shouldn’t have gone in the first place, there was no way I’d miss that show for the world. Tracey and Lina also really enjoyed the show and hope that we can have a repeat experience whenever Secondhand Serenade next goes on tour. On the Road Again

Apparently the wheel has turned full circle once more: it’s almost time to hit the road again. This time, I’ll be moving from my studio apartment in Norwalk into Lina’s [relatively] spacious one-bedroom apartment in Boston.

Move-In at Washington Street

Apartment Move-In

I recently acquired a lease on an apartment in what is inarguably Norwalk’s most lively area, Washington Street. I picked up the keys on Saturday morning and, with the help of Lina and her parents, I was able to transport all of my things to my new residence by Saturday afternoon. Now Monday, I’ve unpacked everything that needs to be unpacked and most everything has been put in its newly respective place.

So Into Inquisitor

I generally tend to stay away from buying software, but once in a while a truly amazing piece of software arises to break that trend. I recently decided to put in the cash for Inquisitor. A product of David Watanabe, Inquisitor is an excellent example of the spectacular quality of his software. Since I started using Inquisitor earlier on in its product cycle, I was instantly hooked. I find now that I use Inquisitor more than I use the address bar! Inquisitor was definitely worth my 5€. For any frequent user of Safari (or Camino), I strongly recommend checking it out.

Spring Break Pictures Online

Spring Break 2006

Since Lina and I are seniors this year, we figured that we should go out with a bang and bring along two close friends for a cruise around the Caribbean. We took Royal Caribbean cruise lines to visit Aruba, Curaçao, St. Maarten, and St. Thomas, departing from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Needless to say, we had a blast!

The Downside of Taking a Break

Two words: Catch-up sucks. I have several hundred e-mails to catch up on, all sitting in my ‘Gentoo’ smart folder in Mail — not to mention my thousand-plus unread news items in NetNewsWire.

I’m slowly making headway on it all, and should be caught up after next weekend. Needless to say, I have something to do besides falling asleep in my less intense classes.

To those who are expecting replies from me but have not yet gotten them: I will get around to you, I assure you.

Cryptography is Come From Greek Word…

Is mean… ‘Secret’. Spent two hours today writing a proof (read: connection between two definitions) of Euler’s totient function. Although I see the function’s connection to cryptography, I’m not sure why I should be so concerned with its proof.

At any rate, I was able to understand and write a concise proof for it, and have moved on to part two (of two) of the homework, which I have declared as completely impossible. Half credit never sounded better.

Anesthetics Rule

As I’m sitting in the dentist office, with a mouthful of gauze and one tooth less than what I came in with, I’d expect to be in excruciating pain. I’d expect to be unable to talk. I’d expect to not want to drive myself home. But I’m not in pain, I can still talk just fine, and I’ll be driving my mother and I home. Such is the wonder of modern drugs.
