Today I completed the last chemistry lab I should ever have to do. Looks like I’ll never have to crack a chemistry lab book again in my life. Never. Ever. Again. After my final exam five days from now, I should be done with chemistry forever. Somehow, though, I think the dreaded subject will come back to haunt me in some graduate career or the other.
In good news, I should have more time to enjoy the things that I really, uh, enjoy. Such as… Not chemistry.

There has been a whole lot of feedback about FlipCount recently. Sadly, I just haven’t had the time to get through all of it yet. What with summer school exams and labs and quizzes, and work deadlines and urgent bug fixes, on top of being home and doing (or avoiding) the whole family thing, I just haven’t been able to do all of the things that I want to do.
Nonetheless, I was able to get through some mail today.

I Spent some time today on one of my pet projects, FlipCount. Felt like I might reward myself since summer session 1 finals finished this afternoon, and kill an outstanding bug in the process. Mission: Accomplished.
All in all I think that the widget is doing fairly well for itself. Ratings sky-rocketed once I cleared out a major standing bug on it’s second release, 0.91b. I had almost 400 downloads just 10 hours after its announcement on DashboardWidgets.com, where it currently remains exclusively available. Continue reading ‘FlipCount Flipped Out’
I was in a hurry. Stupid things always happen when I’m in a hurry. While slicing a more than lovely ‘everything’ New York Bagels bagel with my lovely 9″ serrated loaf knife, I managed to slice right through the bagel and into my left ring fingertip. Things could have been worse: I could have cut my finger off; I could have severed a nerve (not sure yet if I have or haven’t — the cut is deep); I could have gotten a papercut. That’s right. A papercut would be worse. At least pain-wise. Apart from the bleeding (which took a good 20 minutes to dwindle even with pressue and bandage a-la-McGuyver), it’s not bad at all. No pain, really (should this be alarming, or am I just all grow’d up?). So I write to you using one less finger. Sucks, but could have been worse.
Yup, my iPod crashed. I was happily listening while doing some work in the front yard when my playlist ended. Through my pocket, I press the play button again, not willing to get my silicon iPod casing all dusty and dirty (that thing attracts dirt). Nothing came through. I shrugged and got on with my work. When I came inside and took the iPod out of my pocket, I saw the screen shown above. It’s still like that, and nothing seems to affect it. The following is a list of things I’ve tried.
- Press and hold the menu button
- Press and hold any button
- Press and hold all buttons (yes, you can do this)
- Insert, remove, re-insert, re-remove headphone plug
- Plug into computer via firewire
None of the above had any effect on the iPod whatsoever. I suppose I’ll wait for the batteries to drain or something, then see if it’ll come back.
Update (20 minutes later): Following the directions on Apple’s iPod support article, I was able to recover the iPod. Thanks to Lina for the link.
Since I’m staying with Mum lately, I’ve had a chance to cook a little. Normally, at school, I’m not able to cook at all. Between the lack of cooking facilities, time, and ingredients, it just gets tough. When ingredients are already paid for, and utensils are provided along with top-class facilities, it’s too much to refuse.
So that’s just something I cooked up for lunch today. Ingredients: ‘Hong Kong’ noodles, frozen pre-chopped (so sue me — they’re easy to cook!) veggies (including carrots, red bell peppers, squash, baby corn, peas in pod, whole muchrooms, and some other veggies whose names I should know but don’t), two chicken thighs, soy sauce, salt, and olive oil. Yup, that’s it. Took me all of 15 minutes to prepare and cook (not including defrosting time).
As per the description in a previous blog entry, I sent in my PowerBook for repairs last week. I got the machine back Wednesday last week to find not one but three new things about my dear computer.
- Apple replaced the hard drive. Somewhat of a let-down, but I did have a backup of most everything I needed, so it’s not a huge loss. A blessing in disguise, actually: I’ve been meaning to reformat the machine and have a nice fresh clean start, I just hadn’t gotten around to it, and was kind-of waiting for Mac OS X Tiger to be released.
- Apple managed to rip off one of the feet of my PowerBook, as per the pictures above. The first picture is what a normal ‘foot’ on a PowerBook looks like: a dark grey circular rubber pad mounted on a light gray circular piece of plastic. The second picture is what a missing ‘foot’ looks like: no dark grey circular rubber pad mounted atop a light gray circular piece of otherwise-very-empty-looking-not-to-mention-abrasive plastic.
- Apple also managed to put some very light abrasions dead smack in the middle of my PowerBook’s LCD. To the untrained eye, they’re pretty invisible, but I can see them fairly clearly, especially when doing graphic design on a pixel-by-pixel level. The abrasions cover about a square inch of the screen and are shallow enough not to be noticeable to touch.

I got the RadTech-branded version of the BT500 mouse in the mail yesterday. Having waited about two weeks for the thing just to be shipped out — RadTech was out of stock of the silver one I ordered — I was pretty anxious. An illustrated review follows.

Yup, It happened again. Due to a problem identical to that described in a previous post, my laptop was sent in to Apple for repairs. This time around, I wasn’t able even to grab my latest work off of the drive, and of course, haven’t backed up in a while. I hope to have the unit back by Thursday, 2005.04.14. Sad story is, I wasn’t even able to grab my latest work off of the drive before the machine sputtered and died.

I called up Cingular technical support today to discuss using my Sony Ericsson as a modem for my laptop. As it turns out, I was told that it is impossible to use non-TDMA phone networks for making direct data calls.
