…And From the Ashes, An FTP is Reborn

The good news: Charlie’s Server’s FTP service is back online, with all of the old data to boot!

The bad news: One of the drives in the FTP array died.

The ugly news: LVM didn’t want to activate the array in partial mode.

Read on for technical details and how I revived a dead LVM array with a missing drive.

LVM + Moving Around Drives = Unhappy?

When I saw some ugly I/O errors on one of the drives in my LVM volume, I immediately looked into how to move whatever data I could off of that drive and onto another free drive. Luckily, I happened have a few free drives.

After some quick reading online, and the lovely tab-completion available in bash, I found the pvmove command, and decided to put it to use. After not receiving any output for several hours, I decided that the process had hung and killed it. When running pvmove --abort, I got a few instances of the following error.

reload ioctl failed: Invalid argument

iPod Your [Proprietary] Subaru

Since I’ll be doing a good deal of driving in the near future, I decided to iPod my 2003 Subaru Legacy wagon. Little did I know, this is a task easier said than done. As follows are the trials I went through and the final results.

So Into Inquisitor

I generally tend to stay away from buying software, but once in a while a truly amazing piece of software arises to break that trend. I recently decided to put in the cash for Inquisitor. A product of David Watanabe, Inquisitor is an excellent example of the spectacular quality of his software. Since I started using Inquisitor earlier on in its product cycle, I was instantly hooked. I find now that I use Inquisitor more than I use the address bar! Inquisitor was definitely worth my 5€. For any frequent user of Safari (or Camino), I strongly recommend checking it out.

Upgrade to WordPress 2 Complete

Blog on CS is now running WordPress 2.x. The upgrade was smooth save some WPG2 glitches, which were solved within an hour, and some K2 glitches, which were solved within another hour.

All in all, I’m impressed so far. The transition was as smooth as can be expected and the benefits are clearly visible, not to mention hightened security. I highly recommend upgrading to anyone running an older version of WordPress.

More Upgrades for Charlie’s Server

I found a great deal on RAM for Charlie’s Server, so I went ahead and bought two 512MB sticks. This should fill out all four RAM slots for Charlie’s Server to exactly half capacity (2GB). I expect them to be delivered within another week.

I also found a great deal on SATA hard drives, so I bought two 10K RPM Raptor drives for Charlie’s server. They should provide a nice, fast, redundant replacement for the current nearly-decade-old 6GB drive that currently provides root.

I’m done spending for the next month or two.

MPlayer on Mac OS X Out of the Box?!

After giving media-video/mplayer a shot without any patches whatsoever, it somehow compiled out of the box. I recall this not to be the case way back when I first took a look at it earlier this year.

Looks like Apple’s new dev tools are a bit more complacent.

More to come shortly. Once I get done with my mid-terms, I should be good to get some Gentoo work done (read: try to get MPlayer keyworded).

The Downside of Taking a Break

Two words: Catch-up sucks. I have several hundred e-mails to catch up on, all sitting in my ‘Gentoo’ smart folder in Mail — not to mention my thousand-plus unread news items in NetNewsWire.

I’m slowly making headway on it all, and should be caught up after next weekend. Needless to say, I have something to do besides falling asleep in my less intense classes.

To those who are expecting replies from me but have not yet gotten them: I will get around to you, I assure you.

Long Live Charlie’s Server

Charlie’s Server is reborn. The previously mentioned replacement hardware came in a few days back, and the new server is up and running. To be honest, the speed (or lack thereof) of the new Athlon 64 hardware didn’t stun me. All in all, though, I think I made an excellent purchase, particularly in terms of bang for buck. It’s stable as anything, and more than fast enough for my needs.

Replacement Hardware on the Way

As previously mentioned, replacement hardware for Charlie’s Server was pending order. Now, all of the necessary replacement parts have been placed on order and are being shipped to Lina’s residence in South Windsor, Connecticut. It can be expected that Charlie’s Server will return by the last week of September.
