Charlie’s Server is Dead

Charlie’s Server finally bit the dust. In the midst of some hardware upgrades (namely, adding more hard drives for the FTP), the server’s motherboard apparently decided that it’s high time to quit. In the interim, the essential Charlie’s Server services (including this blog) have been moved to a temporary server.

Farewell, Chemistry

Today I completed the last chemistry lab I should ever have to do. Looks like I’ll never have to crack a chemistry lab book again in my life. Never. Ever. Again. After my final exam five days from now, I should be done with chemistry forever. Somehow, though, I think the dreaded subject will come back to haunt me in some graduate career or the other.

In good news, I should have more time to enjoy the things that I really, uh, enjoy. Such as… Not chemistry.

Mail.app and Gentoo IMAPS Have Issues No More

Looks like I’ve finally rooted out the cause of Gentoo’s IMAPS servers returning ‘SSL errors’ in Apple’s Mail.app. It turns out that the way I had configured Mail to check for new messages every minute was not so friendly to Gentoo’s IMAPS server. Increasing said configuration value to every five minutes seems to have fixed the problem.

Slowly Securing the Legacy

Our newest Gentoo for Mac OS X developer, Fabian Groffen, is finally official. Congratulations, Fabian! It looks like the Gentoo for Mac OS X project is finally starting to get some more ‘permanent’ members.

No Time for FlipCount

There has been a whole lot of feedback about FlipCount recently. Sadly, I just haven’t had the time to get through all of it yet. What with summer school exams and labs and quizzes, and work deadlines and urgent bug fixes, on top of being home and doing (or avoiding) the whole family thing, I just haven’t been able to do all of the things that I want to do.

Nonetheless, I was able to get through some mail today.

FlipCount Flipped Out

Screenshot of FlipCount 0.9b - the first public release.

I Spent some time today on one of my pet projects, FlipCount. Felt like I might reward myself since summer session 1 finals finished this afternoon, and kill an outstanding bug in the process. Mission: Accomplished.

All in all I think that the widget is doing fairly well for itself. Ratings sky-rocketed once I cleared out a major standing bug on it’s second release, 0.91b. I had almost 400 downloads just 10 hours after its announcement on DashboardWidgets.com, where it currently remains exclusively available. Continue reading ‘FlipCount Flipped Out’

My iPod Thinks it Runs Windows

iPod Crash

Yup, my iPod crashed. I was happily listening while doing some work in the front yard when my playlist ended. Through my pocket, I press the play button again, not willing to get my silicon iPod casing all dusty and dirty (that thing attracts dirt). Nothing came through. I shrugged and got on with my work. When I came inside and took the iPod out of my pocket, I saw the screen shown above. It’s still like that, and nothing seems to affect it. The following is a list of things I’ve tried.

  • Press and hold the menu button
  • Press and hold any button
  • Press and hold all buttons (yes, you can do this)
  • Insert, remove, re-insert, re-remove headphone plug
  • Plug into computer via firewire

None of the above had any effect on the iPod whatsoever. I suppose I’ll wait for the batteries to drain or something, then see if it’ll come back.

Update (20 minutes later): Following the directions on Apple’s iPod support article, I was able to recover the iPod. Thanks to Lina for the link.

Gentoo for Mac OS X more Gentoo-like

Joe Jezak has been putting in a great deal of work on sys-apps/coreutils-darwin and sys-apps/baselayout-darwin. With Kito’s advice and my pushes, shoves, and testing, we were able to put together a working coreutils package, as well as a preliminary baselayout. So far, the baselayout consists only of env.d stuff, but will grow with time. This is a great step forward for Gentoo for Mac OS X. Time for me to go celebrate in some more code.

Multiple Inheritance for Cascading Profiles

For a long time now, cascading profiles have served Gentoo for Mac OS X very well. For too long now, cascading profiles have been insufficient. Conflicting statements? I think not. Multiple inheritance for cascading profiles would solve a great deal of problems for the Gentoo for Mac OS X team. Continue reading ‘Multiple Inheritance for Cascading Profiles’

Feed the Fire – NewsFire and RSS Readers

Over the last couple of weeks, PulpFiction has been breaking down on me. It started with the poocs.net feed about a month ago. This I wasn’t too fretted about — I figured something odd had happened to the feed. Then it happened with SlashDot. Now that’s something I can’t do without. I’m sure it’s just PulpFiction, since OmniWeb could read SlashDot’s RSS just fine. So I went on a hunt for other decent RSS readers for Mac OS X.
