As it turns out, I was told that it is impossible to use non-TDMA phone networks for making direct data calls.

I fail to see exactly how a data call is different from a voice call, when making a call to a standard dial-up ISP. I’ll be looking into this some more.

On Mac OS X, attempting to use my mobile phone as a modem, I get errors about ‘no carrier’, etc. The phone dials whatever number I tell it to via Internet Connect or the Network Preference Pane, but disconnects immediately after dialing (without even making a connection to the desired number). We’ll see where I can take this. I don’t think there’s much hope.

As an aside, GPRS works just fine through the phone.
